Bone mineral density assesment in ankylosing spondylitis-Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) have the risk of esteoporosis and secondary vertebral compression fractures. Bone mineral density (BMD) of lumbal spine and hip was measured by Dual Energy X-Ray Absorbtiometry (DEXA) in 23 (21 men, 2 premenopausal women) AS patients. The mean age of the patients was 44.95+10.8 years and the mean disease duration was 17.04+11.17 years. Radiograms of the spine, hip and sacroiliac joints were also obtained. It was aimed to investigate the relationship between BMD and X-ray findings and also the relationship between BMD and disease severity. As a results lumbar BMD values were the highest in the severe and lowest in the moderate AS patients. But this difference was not statistically significant. There was no relationship between lumbar spine hip BMD values and disease duration, age clinical and labaratory parameters. BMD values of words triangle were significantly lower in the patients with hip involvement.
